Perhaps the original owner didn’t want to share a quality version and copied the film a few times over himself, in order to have something unique. If you could get a copy from the original owner of the smuggled out film, it would of course be quite brilliant. And both picture and sound quality would suffer for each generation of the video you would get. The problem with trading VHS tapes was of course that, depending on your source, you would get a degraded copy, a dub of a dub of a dub. Qualitywise, they were in pretty bad shape, but still they were something new to watch, and having these unreleased films was a bit exciting. Some time in the late eighties or thereabout, two leaked films started to appear on the lists I got from fellow Beatles video collectors around the world, one was “One Hand Clapping”, the other was the “Rockestra” footage. ![]() I’m an avid video collector and have been since the first VCR was brought into the family in 1981. Has the original movie footage been stolen? So I was thinking, this film was professionally filmed in Abbey Road studios and filed away in McCartney’s vast archive of unrealised movie and film projects, it should have been in pristine quality. Perhaps an indication of what we will find on upcoming bonus DVD’s from the “McCartney” and “Red Rose Speedway” albums? What surprised me was that the footage shown from the “One Hand Clapping” film was of bootleg quality, picturewise. But yesterday I had the opportunity to watch the ITV “Making of Band on the Run” TV special, and they were using archive footage both from the bonus DVD, as well as some home movie footage of a bearded Paul with Linda and the kids and also a couple of scenes from the 1973 “James Paul McCartney” TV special. So I haven’t been able to purchase “Band On The Run” yet. Overall, this is a good way to obtain the audio for the documentary. So far, Universal (who is distributing Paul McCartney’s Archive Series here in Norway) hasn’t managed to get their new product into the shops. The interviews are also cool to listen to, hearing Paul speaking about aging and other topics. It’s great to have another studio version of “Soily” and the very rare song “Suicide”, one of McCartney’s first songs, and a rare version of “1985″. He explains that he wrote these sorts of songs before he knew Rock n Roll. He wears his karate uniform throughout and even shows his moves during the drum improv.ĭescribed by Paul as a “cabaret song”, written when he was around 14 years old, around the age he wrote “When I’m Sixty-Four”. The performances are good for a rehearsal and is interesting for being the only proof that Britton was ever in the band. ![]() This is an excellent way to obtain the audio soundtrack for the video. Watchtower released their version in 2001 with both a VHS of the program and the soundtrack in excellent mono on this release. ![]() A good pressed DVD of the show can be found on One Hand Clapping (Misterclaudel). Two of the earliest releases are One Hand Clapping (Chapter One CO 25109) issued in 1990 and One Hand Clapping (Yellow Cat Records YC 028). Staying on the farm owned by songwriter Curly Putman Jr., they rehearsed with new members, guitarist Jimmy McCullouch and drummer Geoffrey Britton and worked on new songs like “Junior’s Farm.” Band On The Run became Wings’ biggest selling LP and in early 1974 the band and families took a seven week long working vacation to Nashville Tennessee. “One Hand Clapping” is a strange document. There have been many releases of this over the years of both the audio and video. However drummer Britton was dumped by the band, the proposed world tour didn’t happen and “One Hand Clapping” never aired on television. It was f ilmed and recorded at Abbey Road Studios on August 15th, 1974. These rehearsals were for their first true world tour and showing Paul in a generally positive light. To counter this McCartney produced this television documentary showing them rehearsing in Abbey Road Studio. The British press was running many stories about the clashes and imminent breakup of Wings along with the usual rumors about the reunion of The Beatles. In addition to writing new material, Wings were rehearsing with two new members, guitarist Jimmy McCullouch and drummer Geoff Britton. Wings scored their best selling LP with Band On The Run in 1973 and afterwards took a seven week long working vacation in Nashville, Tennessee.
